MEET THE DIP
'The DIP is the difficult stretch between starting or continuing something worthwhile and achieving the result - where progress feels slow, motivation fades and your commitment is tested'.
Seth Godins book inspired me to share this with you because I think we all have life DIPS that CHALLENGE us.
GOOD NEWS...The DIP is NOT a sign that you are failing.
It's the point where your PROMISE is being tested.
Seth Godin’s central idea is NOT simply “never quit.”
It's:
Expect any worthwhile workout or work (in any area of life) to become difficult.
Don’t abandon something important because it's become difficult.
Learn the difference between a TEMPORARY DIP and a genuine DEAD END.
Quit what's wasting your energy (doom scrolling, negative self-talk and couching come to mind) so you can stay committed to what matters.
He suggests a useful question: “Is this something that will respond to effort, courage and investment?” If it will, the DIP is worth navigating.
Looking after your strength, health and independence is NOT a dead end.
A particular diet, exercise, workout, timetable or strategy might need changing - but the same mission always remains.
The KWS DIP Promise we can make to Ourselves
I expect the DIP.
I won't fear the DIP.
I won't mistake a hard DIP for impossible.
I'll adjust the plan before abandoning MY promise to ME.
I'll keep choosing and working on the strongest version of ME.
What does it cost to crossover the DIP?
It might cost you:
Some comfort
A little more planning
Repetition when the novelty has worn off
Patience before the results are visible
Saying NO to distractions
Turning up when your mood says otherwise
Letting go of perfection
Asking for help
Beginning again without making it mean you've failed
The DIP has a price - but so does turning back!
The cost of continuing might be temporary discomfort.
The cost of repeatedly neglecting working out and your health will be lost strength, confidence, capacity, and independence.
Your 'get out' of the DIP Decision Guide
1. Name what's Happening
Say:
“I'm in the DIP. I expected this. I don't need to panic.”
Naming it stops one difficult day from becoming a dramatic story about failure and the self-justified excuse to give up.
2. Check your Tiredness
Not all tiredness means the same thing.
Body tired: Reduce the intensity, recover and keep your next workout.
Mind tired: Begin with 10 minutes and allow movement to create energy...any extra time is a bonus and 10 minutes is SO worthwhile.
Life overloaded: Shorten the workout rather than cancelling the whole mission.
Pain, illness or injury: Seek appropriate advice and modify safely.
Hard is not automatically a reason to quit. Harm is a reason to stop, assess and adjust.
3. Check the Timeframe
Results rarely arrive on the same day as the effort.
Ask:
Have I given this enough consistent time?
Am I judging my whole mission by one difficult week?
Are small improvements already happening?
Would I advise a friend to quit at this point?
Never make a permanent decision in response to a temporary feeling.
4. Identify the Real Obstacle
Is it genuinely a lack of time - or is it:
Poor planning?
Too many distractions?
An unrealistic expectation?
Waiting to “feel motivated”?
Trying to do everything perfectly?
An inconvenient schedule that can be changed?
We all have 24 hours, but we don't all have the same demands, energy or circumstances.
The answer is not guilt. It's finding the smallest, useful action that fits today.
5. Change the Method, not your mission
You can:
Do 15 minutes instead of 30.
Lift lighter while recovering.
Walk when a harder workout is inappropriate.
Attend at a different time.
Ask someone to keep you accountable.
Prepare your clothes, food or diary the night before.
Return after a disrupted week without punishment...and feel proud you are back!
A modified effort still honours the promise.
6. Watch the Story you're repeating
Helplessness can magnify discomfort:
“I never stick to anything.”
“I’m too old.”
“I don’t have time.”
“I’ve ruined everything.”
“If I can’t do it properly, there’s no point.”
Challenge that self-talk!!:
“Today is difficult, but I can still do something.”
“I've restarted before, and I can restart again.”
“My circumstances affect my choices, but they don't make me weak and powerless.”
“Small actions count a LOT.”
7. Choose the next Small Thing
When the whole journey feels overwhelming, ask:
'What can I do in the next 10 minutes that will help me feel stronger, healthier or more in control'?
It might be:
Turn up...even if it's a chat and stretch and your favourite thing you love doing
Drink some water
Have a decent breakfast...it sets up your day
Eat a protein-rich meal x 3
Complete one circuit or 1/2 a class and stretch
Walk for ten minutes
Go to bed earlier
Book your next session
Ask for support
REMEMBER
Small daily choices don't guarantee that every day will feel wonderful. But they repeatedly create opportunities for greater energy, strength, confidence, health and progress and much better self-esteem when we keep our small promises to ourselves.
Don’t wait to love it
You DON'T have to love every workout.
Sometimes it's less about 'doing what you love' and more about remembering why you chose to do the work - and learning to value what that work gives you by 'loving what you do'.
“I choose this work because I love what it allows me to become.”
Your attitude will NOT remove every difficulty, but it can change how you meet it.
Ageing is a situation.
Becoming older, is NOT optional.
Losing every bit of strength without a fight is NOT inevitable.
How we train, recover, eat, think and respond are problems we can work on to fight to stay stronger, more youthful and healthier longer.
You don't have to feel perfect or motivated every day.
You just need to keep delivering YOUR PROMISE TO YOU in a small or bigger way when you can.
Turn up. Do today’s version. Repeat.
Expect the DIP
Recognise the DIP
Plan for the DIP
Adjust within the DIP
Keep YOUR PROMISES TO YOU
Then become the woman who didn’t let the DIP decide her future.
I hope this has given you the inspiration to WELCOME THE DIP because THIS IS WHERE ALL STRONGER WOMEN ARE MADE.
Enjoy your next workout or class at KWS and beat the DIP,
