VO₂ Max - Forget the Paintwork… Build the Engine

Why Your VOâ‚‚ Max Could Be One of the Most Important Health Numbers You'll Ever Have

Most women have spent years worrying about the OUTSIDE.

The scales

The dress size

The wrinkles

The tummy

The mirror

But what if we've been focusing on the wrong thing?

Imagine buying a beautiful sports car. The paintwork is flawless, the seats are luxurious and the chrome sparkles.

Now imagine lifting the bonnet only to discover the engine is struggling.

Suddenly the shiny exterior doesn't matter nearly as much.

Your body is exactly the same.

You can't judge your health by what you see in the mirror.

Someone can look slim yet have poor cardiovascular fitness, low muscle mass, weak bones and an increased risk of chronic disease. This is sometimes called "skinny fat" - a person who appears an ok size on the outside, but has too little and weak muscle and too much fat stored inside around the organs (visceral fat) and have health issues requiring medications - meaning their engine is running rough.

That's why one of the strongest predictors of how well - and how long -you'll live is something called VOâ‚‚ Max.

What is VOâ‚‚ Max?

VOâ‚‚ Max measures how much oxygen your body can use during exercise.

It reflects how well your:

  • Heart pumps blood

  • Lungs absorb oxygen

  • Blood transports oxygen

  • Muscles use oxygen to produce energy

Think of it as your body's engine performance.

The STRONGER your engine, the EASIER everyday life becomes.

  • Walking upstairs

  • Playing with grandchildren

  • Travelling

  • Gardening

  • Carrying shopping

  • Recovering from illness

  • Living independently

Why Does It Matter So Much?

Research consistently shows that people with higher cardiorespiratory fitness have a substantially lower risk of premature death, regardless of body weight.

A higher VOâ‚‚ Max is associated with:

  • Lower risk of heart disease

  • Lower blood pressure

  • Reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance

  • Better brain health and memory

  • More daily energy

  • Improved mood

  • Better endurance

  • Greater independence as we age

  • A longer, healthier life

Perhaps the most exciting part is this:

VOâ‚‚ Max can improve at almost any age.

  • Your heart is trainable

  • Your lungs are trainable

  • Your muscles are trainable

  • Your future is trainable

How Do You Build a Better Engine - VOâ‚‚ Max?

At KWS we don't exercise to only burn calories.

We train to build stronger women from the inside out.

Here are 7 simple ways to improve your VOâ‚‚ Max.

1. Get Breathless Every Workout

If you can chat comfortably throughout your entire workout, your engine probably isn't being challenged enough.

Aim for periods where:

  • Your breathing becomes noticeably heavier.

  • Speaking full sentences becomes difficult.

  • You recover within a minute or two.

That "huffing and puffing" is your heart adapting and becoming stronger.

2. Do Resistance Training and Lift Weights with Purpose

Many women think cardio is the only way to improve fitness.

NOT TRUE

At KWS our core focus is Strength training, especially when moving purposefully on machines and between exercises, because this challenges both your muscles and your cardiovascular system.

More muscle means your body becomes more efficient at using oxygen.

3. Include Short Bursts of Higher Intensity

One of the most effective ways to improve VOâ‚‚ Max is interval training.

At KWS this means:

  • Pushing your limits on every station and off station exercise in class

  • Short higher intensity bursts on functional exercises

  • Faster step-ups

  • Quicker rowing

  • Brisker walking

  • Faster cycling

  • Faster high knee rebounding

Even 30–90 seconds of harder effort followed by recovery can make a big difference.

4. Walk With Purpose

On the treadmill or outside the gym, don't just walk.

Walk as though you're late for an appointment.

A brisk pace encourages your heart and lungs to work harder and builds your aerobic fitness.

5. Choose Hills and Stairs

Instead of avoiding them, use them.

Climbing naturally raises your heart rate and strengthens both your muscles and your cardiovascular system.

Every staircase is another opportunity to build your engine.

6. Keep Challenging Yourself

Your body adapts surprisingly quickly.

To continue improving, gradually:

  • Increase resistance by pushing harder

  • Increase speed

  • Reduce rest periods

  • Push just a little harder than your last work out, last week or last month

Progress keeps your engine improving.

7. Show Up Consistently

This may be the most important habit of all.

  • VOâ‚‚ Max isn't built in one amazing workout

  • It's built by consistently turning up week after week

  • Three or four quality sessions every week can completely change your health over time

Small improvements, repeated often, produce extraordinary results.

The KWS Diamond Standard Philosophy

At KWS we AREN'T INTERESTED in helping women simply LOOK BETTER.

Smile:)

You're not just exercising.

You're tuning your engine and you are smiling :) from the inside out.
